Understanding Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)

What defines Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)?

SCD is a severe, inherited genetic disorder. It is characterized by a mutation in the hemoglobin gene, causing red blood cells to deform into a sickle shape. This rigidity restricts blood flow, leading to chronic pain (Vaso-Occlusive Crises), organ damage, and severe anaemia.

No. Individuals with the Trait carry one sickle gene and one normal gene. They are generally healthy and do not exhibit the full symptoms of SCD. However, they can pass the sickle gene to their children, making pre-marital and genetic counseling essential for family planning.

Hydroxyurea is the primary disease-modifying therapy. It works by increasing the production of fetal hemoglobin (HbF), which prevents red blood cells from sickling. Consistent use significantly reduces the frequency and severity of painful crises and the need for transfusions.

SLSCF Programs and Access

How do I enroll in the subsidized medication program?

Enrollment requires a formal application that verifies your diagnosis and demonstrates financial need. Contact our Patient Access Coordinator through the Contact Us page to schedule an initial consultation and obtain the application documents.

We actively advocate for policy changes to make advanced treatments like Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) and emerging Gene Therapies accessible and affordable. We also help patients find eligible clinical trials and support logistical and fundraising needs for BMT procedures.

Yes. We offer confidential, subsidized screening services for individuals, couples, and newborns. We strongly recommend couples planning a family undergo genetic counseling with us to understand inheritance risks.
